Nitrate release and reduction in low land environments

Background


The pollution of groundwater and surface waters with nitrate is still a major problem for the water quality in Northern Germany. The release of these substances is irregular in space and in time and is a result of fertilizer application, redox conditions in soils and redox conditions in the subsurface and in rivers.

Main Task


The objective of this bachelor thesis is to study the release and transformation of nitrate along a low land river (or creek). The study will be carried out in a laboratory flume simulating a lowland riverbed. Morphological changes and their impact on nitrate reduction and on the exchange of the flowing river water with the hyporheic interstitial will be carried out.
